Middle Tennessee is bracing for a predicted wave of freezing weather. Take a cue from our pup Finn and BUNDLE UP! Then, learn what you can do to protect your home from damage from burst frozen pipes. (This advice comes from our carrier Erie Insurance, who we have represented for 20 years and counting!)
Here are 5 things you can do to prevent frozen pipes:
- Drain water from pipes that are likely to freeze
- Disconnect any hoses from the outside of your home
- Open kitchen cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around pipes
- Allow faucets to drip cold water on the coldest days (the movement will make it harder for the water to freeze).
- Keep garage doors closed to help protect water lines
If you notice that water does not come out of a faucet when it is turned on, this is a sign of a potentially frozen pipe. Call a plumber to help thaw frozen pipes before they burst and cause further damage.
